Written from the perspective of a little girl, this story gives an excellent idea of what it was like for the immigrants who came to America during the years, 1892 to 1924 This is the story of six year old Krysia Petrowski s voyage to America.Krysia s father was already in America to make a new life for his family When he had a job and a home, he sent for his wife, daughter and two sons The decision to leave Poland, their homeland was difficult leaving behind family and friends was not an easy thing to do The children could only take necessary items and each child was allowed to bring just one toy Their clothes, blankets, shoes and toys were knotted up in a sheet to be carried over the shoulder Krysia had a problem choosing between her two beloved dolls She took Basha because she was the smaller of the two dolls and would take up less space. After leaving their village, it took the family four days of walking to arrive at the port where a large steamship was there to take them across the ocean The difficult sea voyage involved poor sanitation, sickness and lack of decent food After about fourteen days, the passengers finally view the Statue of Liberty and depart at Ellis Island on Christmas Eve.On Ellis Island, the immigrants went through many inspections, which included medical examinations for each family member The paperwork and examination usually took three to five hours to complete Passing the examinations meant that the immigrants were allowed into the country Those who did not have the proper papers or failed their medicals, were delayed for days or even months and could be sent back to their original countries. This well written and carefully illustrated little book is ideal for children who are studying the history of America or the story of their own family.

I had this book as a child, and the got it again for my 5 year old My family is polish and came through Ellis island, so it s a great way to teach my children about their history It s also just a nice story The little girl in the story has to choose one of her two dolls to bring with her from Poland, it also goes through the journey on the boat and the process at Ellis island She was on the young end of the target audience, but she was engaged it prompted good conversations about sacrifice and living with fewer things toys, clothes , and the importance of family.

Bought and read this book to a 3 and 1 2 years old She loved the story and stuck through the whole thing Later, we looked at a globe and talked about how her Polish, German and Lithuanian relatives immigrated to the US What a sweet and colorful story

Beautifully illustrated and written in language a child of five can easily understand, An Ellis Island Christmas is a meaningful read for a parent to share with his her child or children In the spring of 2013 I taught a course entitled Oral Interpretation of Children s Literature at Brooklyn College I mandated this book among others for all my students who enrolled Each had to perform a selection from the manuscript I was particularly interested in acquiring and reading the book because its author had been my student many years ago She was most praiseworthy back then, and I am proud to be reviewing one of her works once again Moreover she knew then that I was not an easy mark for a high grade Work had to be of superior quality to receive an evaluation indicating superior I remain the same way today An Ellis Island Christmas will remain in my personal library, and I will read it to my grandson on his next visit from California to New York Dan Flickstein

The book came in great condition and is a wonderful addition to my Social Studies lesson of the NE Region. This heart warming book really displays the hardships and love that brought so many people from Europe to Ellis Island to begin a new life.
